“DeeDee’s Balcony”—A new stage play in III acts

Hello,

I have recently completed a new stage play that’s been in development since October, 2022. DeeDee’s Balcony, a stage play in III acts, will soon be available for digital download on all Kindle devices and at some point, in physical print as part of a-yet-unfinished trilogy of plays. DeeDee’s Balcony was a different project, including characterization and focus of trying to deconstruct my interpretations of archetypical and contextual themes in drama—mainly, the unspoken conventions and pretext of characters being readily identifiable as either protagonist or antagonist. In more basic terms, I wanted to explore (best as able), the relational dialectics between audience and playwright, and how it might pertain to narrative if we came into a situation contextless (i.e., “reading between the lines” from the beginning). With regards to inspirations and or models, DeeDee’s Balcony was heavily influenced by the following stage plays: David Mamet’s American Buffalo, Sartre’s No Exit, and Lynn Siefert’s Coyote Ugly.

A basic rundown of the premise for DeeDee’s Balcony: Taking place at the titular bar, DeeDee’s Balcony, recently engaged Angelica finds herself distraught after believing her fiancé to have cheated. Beginning post-chaos, the story loosely follows her attempts to reconcile what she believes versus whom she trusts. Between DeeDee, the owner of said bar, Helga, her alcoholic friend, Sandy, their drug-dealer, Bebee, an enigmatic wallflower, and self-professed “himbo” Bartender, the truth about the aforementioned night only becomes further obfuscated when certain dynamics are brought to light, for which, the facts seem to matter less and less in-lieu of personal vendettas and unspoken resentments.

As far as language employed, DeeDee’s Balcony is purposefully jagged, explicit and less than flowery in order to serve its themes, characterizations and atmosphere. While perhaps not going to be everybody’s cup of tea per se, overall I’m proud of it and think it’s compelling. As of now, I have already started sending the final version for competition and potential optioning for production, though nevertheless, I feel like it’s a good enough read on its own without a stage.

Thank you to everyone continuing to support my aspirations, for which, I will forever be grateful to you. Hope you enjoy <3
